The strut mounting fixes the top of the suspension strut to the body. The rubber in the mounting isolates the body from road shock and noise; on a front axle a bearing in or under the mounting lets the strut turn with the steering.
A worn mounting or bearing knocks over bumps, creaks or binds when the steering is turned, and can stop the steering returning to centre.
Strut mountings are commonly replaced when the shock absorber is replaced, since the strut has to be dismantled either way.
