A radiator hose carries coolant between the engine and the radiator. The upper hose takes hot coolant from the engine to the radiator; the lower hose returns cooled coolant to the water pump. Further hoses feed the heater and, on many engines, an expansion tank.
Each hose is moulded to the route it has to follow through the engine bay. A hose of the wrong shape kinks, rubs on neighbouring parts or strains its connections, which is why a radiator hose is always identified by the OE reference of the original part and not by diameter and length alone.
