The crankcase ventilation hose, often called the breather hose, returns blow-by gases from the crankcase to the intake so that they are burnt in the engine and not released. In trade catalogues it is listed as “Hose, crankcase ventilation”.
The hose works in oil vapour and engine heat. When it hardens, cracks or splits it lets unmetered air into the intake or lets oil mist out, which shows up as an oily engine bay, a whistling noise or rough idling.
