An engine mounting fixes the engine and gearbox to the body or subframe and, at the same time, keeps their vibration away from it. The rubber element bonded between the metal parts absorbs the dynamic forces of the engine; the metal parts carry the load and locate the engine.

The rubber ages with heat, oil and load. A worn mounting lets the engine move too far: vibration and knocking increase and the engine visibly rocks when it is started or switched off.
